Prison Island

01/25

Changuu Island, better known as Prison Island, is located 5.6 km or 3.5 miles off the coast of Stone Town.  The island was uninhabited until the 1860s when the Sultan of Zanzibar commissioned it to be used as a prison for rebellious slaves before they were sold in the main slave market of Stone Town.  When Zanzibar became a British protectorate in the 1890s, the British purchased the island and built a prison.  But the island was never used as a prison but was instead used for quarantining people with Yellow Fever and Malaria.  During this time, the island spent half the year as a quarantine station and half of the year as a resort.  In 1919, the British Governor of the Seychelles sent a gift of four Aldabra giant tortoises. which their descendants now enjoy the grounds in a protective status.

Tours of Prison Island  can be combined with Nakupenda Beach.
