Mt. Meru is the second largest mountain in Tanzania and is only overshadowed by Kilimanjaro. It is a dormant stratovolcano that currently stands at 4,562.13 meters (14,968 ft), but was once much higher, losing most of its height during an eruption about 8,000 years ago. It last had a minor eruption in 1910. its lavas are alkaline in character and contain nephelinite, similar to Ol Doinyo Lengai. Mt. Meru lies in Arusha National Park and is accessible through the Momella Gate. The fertile slopes of the volcano host a forest with a diversity wildlife like monkeys, leopards, and hundreds of species of birds. It is considered a difficult climb and can be summitted and descended in three to four days. Three days should only be attempted by experienced hikers in peak shape.
